Trunnion mounted ball valves are an excellent choice for on/off service in large high pressure applications because the ball is secured at the top and bottom of the design. Ball valves are designed in accordance with ASME B16.34 and API 608, API 6D or BS EN ISO 17292 where applicable.
The trunnion ball valve is a form of quarter-turn valve that uses a hollow, perforated, and fixed/supported ball to control the flow through it.
Trunnion mounted valves mean that the ball is bearing constrained and only allowed to rotate, with most of the hydraulic load being supported by the system constraints, resulting in low bearing stresses and no shaft fatigue. Line pressure drives the upstream valve seat against the retaining ball so that line pressure pushes the upstream valve seat against the ball to seal it.
